Vulnotes vs PwnDocBring your PwnDoc data. Write together in real time.
Looking for a PwnDoc alternative? Vulnotes imports your PwnDoc companies, clients and vulnerability library with a built-in importer, and turns your existing Word template into an editable layout. From there, your pentest team designs reports in a visual builder with live preview, writes together in real time, reviews on snapshots and exports to PDF, DOCX, XLSX and JSON, with built-in EU-hosted AI that anonymizes recognized sensitive data. One per-user price covers SaaS or self-hosted. PwnDoc is a free, open-source report generator that you host yourself and that fills a Word template with your findings.

Migrate from PwnDoc with the built-in PwnDoc importer
Vulnotes connects directly to your PwnDoc instance and imports your data. PwnDoc companies become Vulnotes clients, with their logos, PwnDoc clients become contacts in their company, and vulnerabilities come across with their CVSS scores, custom fields, images and language versions. Each category you select becomes a vulnerability template, and detected duplicates are skipped.
Your Word template follows through the DOCX template import, so your team keeps the library and the report design it has built over the years, and starts its next engagement in Vulnotes rather than from scratch.
Design report templates visually, and keep your PwnDoc Word template
In Vulnotes, report templates are built in the browser with a drag-and-drop builder. Pages, headers and footers, variables and finding loops are placed in the editor, the preview shows the result as you work, and the same design renders to PDF and native DOCX, with XLSX and JSON exports alongside.
PwnDoc fills a Word template that contains tags, edited in Word and checked by generating a report. Import that template into Vulnotes and its text, headings, lists, tables, charts and images become an editable layout; replace the PwnDoc tags with Vulnotes variables and loops, and from then on anyone on the team can adjust the design without opening Word.
Real-time collaboration instead of last save wins
Vulnotes merges edits as they happen, with live cursors and per-field presence, so two testers can work in the same finding or section without overwriting each other. Real-time co-editing is included in the plan.
PwnDoc audits are multi-user and show who is in which section, and its documentation states that when two users edit the same section, the last one to save wins. With Vulnotes, your team can split a report however it likes during a busy engagement.
Review is built on the same principle. When a report goes to review, Vulnotes creates a read-only snapshot; the reviewer compares it with the live report in a change view, sees only what changed and leaves annotations on the rendered pages.
AI for pentest reports: included, EU-hosted and anonymized
Vulnotes includes an EU-hosted AI service with 1M tokens per user per month, ready to draft, rewrite and translate findings and report sections. You can also bring your own provider among 12 provider types, including OpenAI-compatible endpoints and fully local models through Ollama.
PwnDoc offers opt-in AI writing assistance connected to a provider account you configure, and its documentation notes that report content is sent to that provider. Vulnotes replaces recognized client names, person names, emails, IP addresses, hostnames, scope entries and credential patterns with placeholders before each request, so your team uses AI without handing client details to the model.
Vulnotes also provides an MCP server for connecting your own assistant to your instance.
Client portal and single sign-on for growing pentest teams
PwnDoc delivers a Word report and does not offer a client portal; sign-in uses local accounts with 2FA. Vulnotes adds an optional white-label client portal at €10 per Vulnotes user per month, on SaaS and self-hosted, where clients track remediation, request retests and sync findings to Jira, GitHub Issues or Azure Boards.
Your team signs in with Microsoft Entra ID, Google or LDAP, with two-factor authentication, and engagement planning shows tester availability and detects scheduling conflicts before the test starts.
PwnDoc pricing vs Vulnotes: self-hosted or SaaS at one price
PwnDoc is free and open source under the MIT licence. It runs on your own servers with Docker, and your team handles updates, the database, TLS certificates and backups, with help through GitHub issues.
Vulnotes costs €48 per user per month, billed monthly or annually, whether you use the SaaS or self-host it with Docker, with a 14-day trial when you schedule a demo. Air-Gap Server and Air-Gap Workstation editions cover disconnected networks.
The Vulnotes team ships the updates and provides support by email, in the app or through tickets. Your team spends its time on engagements rather than on running the reporting tool.
How to migrate from PwnDoc to Vulnotes
Vulnotes has a PwnDoc importer under Administration > Settings > Integrations. It connects to your PwnDoc instance and imports companies, clients and the vulnerability library. Your Word template comes across through the DOCX template import.
- 1
Connect to your PwnDoc instance
Enter your PwnDoc URL and a JWT token taken from the token cookie of a logged-in PwnDoc session, then click Test Connection. Your PwnDoc instance must be reachable at a public address while the import runs.
- 2
Import companies, clients and vulnerabilities
PwnDoc companies become Vulnotes clients (with logos), PwnDoc clients become contacts in their company, and vulnerabilities are imported with CVSS scores, custom fields, images and their language versions. You choose which categories to import, and each category becomes a vulnerability template. Detected duplicates are skipped.
- 3
Import your Word template
Import the .docx template you used in PwnDoc. Vulnotes keeps the layout, text, tables and images. Replace the PwnDoc tags with Vulnotes variables and finding loops, then check every page in the live preview.
- 4
Link templates and check fields
Attach the vulnerability templates created from your PwnDoc categories to the report template, and check that the fields map to what the layout expects, especially custom fields and severity.
- 5
Start new engagements in Vulnotes
Keep your generated DOCX deliverables as your archive and start new engagements in Vulnotes. Data from other tools or scripts can go through the standardized JSON import.
